BE A LOBSTER
Too many people (including myself) care too much about what everyone else thinks of them. I was bullied all throughout high school and the trauma carried me into college. I often walk through campus, head down low, afraid to be seen. I am uncomfortable a lot of times in social situations. You know who’s also uncomfortable? Lobsters.
Lobsters outgrow their shell a few times in their life and its uncomfortable. It’s called molting. Lobsters molting is a lot like when humans go through challenging or uncomfortable experiences in order to grow. Just as a lobster must shed its tight, restrictive shell to continue growing, we often have to go through tough situations that push us outside our comfort zones. During these times, we may feel vulnerable or exposed, much like the lobster does right after shedding its shell when it’s soft and defenseless.
However, just as the lobster’s new shell eventually hardens and becomes stronger, we come out of these difficult experiences more resilient, having learned and grown from them. It’s a natural part of life—both for lobsters and for us—to face periods of discomfort in order to move forward and become stronger.
And on Be a Lobster, we are going to teach myself and others to get comfortably uncomfortable, and become confidently ourselves. Through “lobster therapy,” sharing embarrassing stories, making people run around in lobster costumes and so much more- it’s time to remind people we live on a floating rock and to allow themselves to be seen. Life’s too short to hide in your shell! It’s a shellabration…
